What is collected and why
When you read the site (no signup needed):
- Pageviews, country, device, and referrer via Google Analytics 4 and Cloudflare Web Analytics. This is aggregate analytics, not personal profiling. We use it to see what content lands and what does not.
- Search query data Google chooses to share with us via Search Console. We use this to decide which posts to refresh.
When you subscribe (free or paid):
- Email address, name, signup country (inferred from IP), and authentication session tokens via Ghost Members. Required to log you in via magic link and deliver the newsletter.
- For paid members: billing country, last 4 of card, and subscription status via Stripe. We never see your full card number — Stripe stores that. We only see what they show us in the dashboard.
When you email us:
- Your email address and the message body. Standard inbox.
How long it is kept
- Analytics data: GA4 default retention is 14 months for individual events, 38 months for aggregates. Cloudflare Analytics holds 6 months by default.
- Member records: as long as you have an account. Delete your account in /account/ to remove yourself; we keep the bare minimum (deleted-account marker) for fraud and chargeback prevention as required by Stripe.
- Email correspondence: indefinite, in standard inbox.
Who it is shared with
The site uses these third parties. Each has its own privacy policy.
- Google Analytics — pageview data
- Google Search Console — search query data
- Cloudflare — DNS, CDN proxy, analytics
- Stripe — payment processing for premium tier
- Ghost (self-hosted) — content, members, newsletter delivery
- Mailgun / SES (whichever Ghost is configured for) — transactional and newsletter email
Data is never sold. The only sharing is operational — needed to run the service.
Your rights
If you are an EU/UK resident under GDPR, or a California resident under CCPA, you have the right to request a copy of your data, correction, or deletion. Email hello@infratales.com with the request and the email address you signed up with. We respond within 30 days, usually faster.
You can also delete your account directly at /account/, which removes member data immediately.
Cookies
- GA4 cookies (
_ga,_ga_*) — analytics, ~2 year lifetime - Stripe cookies — set on checkout pages, session-scoped
- Cloudflare cookies — bot detection, session-scoped
- Ghost session cookie — only after you sign in, kept for the session
There is no advertising cookie because there are no ads on this site.
Children
The site is intended for working software engineers and architects. Not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, the date at the top of this page updates and members get one email notice. Cosmetic copy changes do not trigger a notice.
